Odd Sighting....?

We've been getting a lot of rain lately, between Thursday and Friday last week we had over 3 inches. Friday afternoon the showers finally broke so I decided to take a walk and I found this guy walking right in the middle of the road. I don't live near any lakes or ponds so I have no idea where it came from, it's quite a mystery. After I snapped the photos I put it in a bucket and took it to the river and released it.

That is very funny John! Do you suppose he escaped from someone fridge? I remember visiting my Aunt and Uncle on Long Island, I'd open the fridge in the morning to get breakfast and a fresh live lobster (commonly known as dinner) would drop out!! Ha Ha!!

Good work on both accounts! (Releasing him and the photo!)
That really is pretty odd, finding a crayfish so well off it's mark.
Cheers, Klaus

Wow! That would be quite an unusual thing. I'm glad you were kind enough to return it to a safe haven.

Great photos of your visiting creature. Crayfish or lobster? I can't tell the size in the photo. I don't think Crayfish need a lot of water...we used to have crayfish holes in the front yard...anywhere that's a bit low and damp.

That is too funny that he is in the middle of no where. We use to catch these as kids. We called them Crawdaddies. They are also very tasty boiled with corm and potato's.

Hello John

Crayfish takes a stroll down main road - I've hear dit al now!!

Can you come and get all the American crayfish back from here (England)? They are causing real difficulties for our native - and smaller - crayfish.

Best wishes, Adrian

Hi John

If you take your crayfish back, then we'll come and get our House Sparrows back in return. (-:

Really enjoy your photography!

Hallo John,
not really so unusual even water creatures need to change appartments now and then. Maybe there were muscle bound meanies in his neighbourhood and he prefered greener pastures. In our long dry spells they often go on overland trecks for miles looking for a water-hole. Sometimes our dams dry up so the bottoms crack and their holes dry up leaving them no alternative but migration. In the same situation I too would have given your lady friend a ride.

John- This could have been a burrowing crayfish. They live in burrows on the ground and typically come out at night to hunt on land, but with all the rain you guys have been having, it may have been out during the day, or perhaps it got lost and couldn't find its burrow.
