Quite The Ruby Throat...
Here's the male hummingbird grabbing a quick snack while the female isn't around, it's easy to see how they got their name. The feeder was empty the other day so I brought it in to fill it. When I brought it back out the male was hovering around looking for it. When it spotted me it came over and landed on the feeder and started drinking while I was still holding it. It was quite something to see a hummer that close.
Beautiful John! We have been sitting on our porch totally amused by the antics of our at least 4 hummingbirds (3 females and one male). I did try to get a decent shot but no luck yet. They don't seem to be as tame as the northern clan! But they are getting used to us now and wont scare so easily. Keep that feeder full and wear safety glasses!!!
It wasn't the food at all, just your mafnetic personality John. What a splendid little fellow with his red muffler and gorgeous plumage. Next thing you'll be attracting flocks of them.
I don't think I have seen a hummingbird here in Australia. Kookaburra yes, but am sure our icon is more noisy than your hummingbird because Kooks do have a raucous laugh. Beautiful red scarf she wears.
Great photos you have on your blog.. I just added you to my blogroll! I hope to come back and visit again.

My books are hot off the presses at Blurb! Take a sneak peek and place your order if you're so inclined by clicking on the cover photo above. An eBook version for download to your iPad or iPhone is now available in the iTunes store.
I live in Lewiston, Maine and have for most of my life. I've always had an interest in nature; as a kid I read books by Edwin Way Teal, Rachael Carson, among others, and I used to love studying the Golden Nature Guides. When I got into photography it was natural for me to take pictures of the natural world. A few years ago I got into kayaking and that allowed me to get to places I would never be able to by hiking and of course this gives me more photography oppurtunities. I realized years ago you don't have to travel to exotic locations to get good photographs. I have to admit I'm lucky to be living in a beautiful state with a lot of natural diversity, but I've taken good pictures right in my own back yard and neighborhood.

that hummer is stunning.
we have no nectarivorous birds in the Alps, I miss them.
What do you feed them, btw?
Beautiful bird - I'm pretty sure we don't have any Humming Birds in Britain, shame.
I'd be careful around the female too! THAT'S HER FEEDER!
This is the best shot of a Ruby-throat's throad that I've ever seen.
: )
Beautiful.
I have never seen a shot of a humming bird so "still"... so it is great to see a shot of one by a photographer I admire!
Great shot, It always amazes me that some birds can be so brave.
Spectacular image of a stunning beauty. I loved this image.
A fascinating image John. The red collar what an amazing sight.

Wonderful! They do get very attached to "their" feeders. I'm not seeing any regularly. For some reason they don't get real active here until July.
Superbe oiseau et superbe photo en gros plan: belle construction d'image, avec le collier rouge du colibri qui répond au rouge de la mangeoire :-)Beautifull bird and fascinating close-up image. Great picture's construction: red collar in harmony with bird table.
John, I love that Bokeh- What focal lenght/aperature lens do you use for your hummer shots?
Tom
Bravo John! Excellent photo!
Great shot. stunning color..strange to see the female (last post) being the mean one, asit is usually the males that are soo agressive.
Oh My Gosh..that is ONE awesome photo..woohoo.
thanks for sharing John..
