From the Past...

I have thousands and thousands of photographs that either sit on a hard drive or are in a filing cabinet in slide form. A very small percentage have seen the light of day, I decided to change that. Recently I've started working on a 30 year retrospective book project and I've been going through my archives, here is one the photos I found taken on Fuji Velvia film. I used to be obsessed with macro photography but in recent years I've strayed away from that, I think it's about time to go back to my roots.

Dew Season is Here....

Before sunrise is the best time for these type of photos.

More Detail...

This butterfly is called a prarie ringlet and in this photo you can see how it got its name. I've posted photos of this type of butterfly in the past but you couldn't see the ring, they normally just appear a grayish brown when the wings are closed, some people thought it was a moth. When the wings are open, the top is orange and black but you can't tell when they're resting like in this picture. Butterflies usually spend the night clinging to plants waiting for the sun to come up. This one was warming up so it was starting to spread it wings showing off its ring.

Spring has Sprung...

The weather this week has been very spring like, the warmest temperatures of the season. As I write this I can hear a cardinal calling outside, I should put up a feeder so I can attract him to the backyard. With the warm weather I know it'll just be a matter of time before I'm taking photos like the ones above. These were taken at sunrise on two different occasions, the top butterfly is an American Copper and the bottom one is a Prairie Ringlet. Yes, I used my foil fill technique on both of these pictures.

Early Morning Butterflies...

I took these photos early in the morning, not this morning of course; again it feels like winter out there.

Butterflies Fluttering By......

This is a late summer shot from a couple of years ago. The sun was just coming up and these butterflies were warming their wings so they could take off and look for nectar. I was lucky to see two on one goldenrod plant.

My favorite subject matter...

We're having a lot of dreary weather this month so again I have no new shots to post. Instead I'm putting up some photos of my favorite subjects to photograph; with the cloudy weather I need to see some color. Enjoy.
