Here in Maine herons are not real cooperative to get photos of. This guy was an exception, he didn't allow a real close approach but closer than most. I spent some time in Florida a few years ago and I must say the bird photography is a whole lot easier down there, especially in the Everglades. The herons in Maine take off almost as soon as they see you, this guy was in a little cove off of the Androscoggin River in Turner.

That's so funny, John. It makes me think of the mallards around here. When I go to Lake Ontairo the little buggars will come right up looking for bread or whatever you have but here in my pond they stay as far away from me as they can and if I make one wrong move they take right off!!!
I love that funny looking heron!!
Greetings!
I enjoy reading your blog since I've created an account here.
I am quite new to photograpy also - as you may see in my blog - and wanted to ask you concerning bird photography. I've seen plenty of beautiful macro photos of birds, but what I don't fully understand is how it is possible to make both clear and big pics of birds without actually making them fly away? =)
Nice shot of the head sticking up! The herons here are skitterish, too.
A fantastic blog you've got here. Very well done. Keep up the great work. Fantastic photographs.
I really like this shot.. Not the usual.. thanks for sharing..
Well, you got 'em! Wish ours were a little more timid. They came right into my yard and ate my fish!

Beautiful, John. Not all pictures have to be close-up shots to be wonderful, and this one is. It shows the environment perfectly. I agree about the birds in Florida. I was in the Everglades, and one day I sat down, and a cormorant flew in next to me, and just stood there within 3 feet of me. It was so close that I couldn't take any pictures of it.
Must be that infamous Yankee reserve?
John- Ah yes, well, I'm not sure what it is about the birds of Florida, but I know that we Midwesterners are plenty open and friendly, but our great blue herons sure are skittish as well.
Tom
Interesting shot - it looks like he popped his head out to see if it was safe!

My father-in-law from Maine and a native Maine-iac calls that bird a sh*t-poke. Have you ever heard anyone else use that terminology? Great shot really.
