I like to spend the first of January out photographing some where but yesterday it was so bitterly cold I stayed inside. This photo is from New Year's day a few years ago. I went to Sabattus River to photograph ice patterns that the flowing water creates on the rocks and I ended up photographing this muskrat, there were actually three of them hanging around that morning. This guy swam right past me about ten feet away and it looked like it was holding a rock but when it climbed up on the ice I saw it was a mussel and it proceeded to break it open and chow down. I just had my point and shoot with me at the time but I thought the photo came out pretty good.

Nothing wrong with a point and shoot it that is the sort of result you get! Great shot.
I wish my point and shooting was as good :-) Don't blame you for staying in from the cold. The older I get the more I hate winter and we are having a fairly mild one so far. Interesting to see this muskrat. I usually only see the damage they do to the dam on our pond..and maybe a head swimming in the water.
Wow, that makes me feel cold. Nice one John :-)
Thats great John! I get these guys in my pond every year, but they don't pop out for a photo shoot very often!
Glad you're surviving the hard weather and still sending wonderful photos. That was quite a sight I guess.
Beautiful pictures througout. I really enjoyed browsing here. Thanks
The shot is great. I can't get over anything that swims, gets wet and then sits out in the cold like it's nothing. All I can think is hypothermia. :-D
This is a great shot. You never know what you will see when you are out taking photos...
The weather here has not been cooperating either..too cold, then too dark, just can't seem to get light enough to focus properly.( at least that is my excuse..) congrats on the muskrat..what a way to start off the new year..
Hey John
It's been cold here too(-12 in some places) but I suspect that that is warm in comparison to you!! On the previous blog - what excellent shots and all flowers that we have here too I think. Amazing.
Best wishes, Adrian
Hi there-- what a cute picture--I am always amazed by what you post.
What a thrill it is to have a brush with nature and have a wild animal feel comfortable enough with human presence to simply go about its business. Great shot.
